Dubai is a 4-piece alternative-rock band from Vancouver, BC that believes in one thing: Honesty at all costs. Say what you want about pop, rock, pop-rock, jazz-crimes, and other near-death experiences; All Dubai wants to do is write and sing from the heart.
Dubai's four members all met while studying jazz music at a Vancouver university. Upon realizing that most of what they learned was what not to do – no doubled thirds, no parallel fifths, chords only move like this, and melodies never go like that – they set out commit the ultimate act of rebellion: to do something. Marina Bennett (vocals/keyboards) and Eric Severinson (vocals/guitar), both accomplished songwriters in their own right, found that their conflicting views and polar-opposite tastes combined into something stronger than themselves. And in the summer of 2011, with the addition of Nic Bermudez (bass/vocals) and Mark Kerrey (drums/vocals), the roster was complete.
2012 has seen several milestones in Dubai's short history: Their first show (a sold-out performance at Vancouver's historic Railway Club), and the independent digital release of their first EP, 'Bring Out Your Dead'. The EP was recorded in one eight-hour day in a North Vancouver rehearsal hall, with friends videoing the session. The live-off-the-floor videos are a testament to Dubai's clever songs, bold harmonies, and energetic live performances. Look out for Dubai in the near future: honest talent like this makes no excuses, and it doesn't stand still.
