2. Grandad Sam - a cool gospel swing about a man who can't help looking' fine - for those who love their roots :)
3. Another Lonely 24 - a past empty and lost heart, for those who feel :( So there you have it.Looking forward,SG

My first ever interview - Long Beach Radio, Tofino

I was in Tofino this past weekend for a show at the Weigh West Marine Resort and had the great opportunity of meeting Geoff Johnson of Long Beach Radio and have an interview with him on the air. As this was my first ever live radio interview, I really did not know what to expect. However, I did mentally prepare myself to simply be me :)
On the drive in, I heard my song Grandad Sam playing on the radio, and I can't even tell you how awesome that was :) My travelling groupies and I were silent listening to the swinging tune about my grandad as I was swerving through the narrow one lane road from Port Alberni to Tofino! Sun was shining, breeze, lakes, snow capped mountains, it was fantastic!!
The show was to start at 8pm and we arrived at 6pm in Tofino, with a sound check scheduled for 7pm, and I had to do this interview, so I met up with Geoff and he drove us to the studio - this absolutely awesome spot literally on a getty off the water over looking the ocean. It was the coolest place to do my first ever radio interview!
So I tuned up the guitar knowing that Geoff wanted me to play a song ( I had prepared an acoustic RnB-ish version of Grandad Sam)... and then we were on the air!
I ended up playing not only Grandad Sam, but also my acoustic versions of Norwegian Wood and Rebel Yell! SO on the spot, but I rocked out - it was GREAT! We spoke of FUSIONpresents, why I left the corporate beautiful world of L'Oreal Paris, and what I'm all about - ENTERTAINMENT.
That last topic started with Geoff saying something along the lines of "with you Sami it's all about entertaining and not just pushing your music". I loved that, because it was on the money. It IS all about entertaining people - music has ALWAYS been about entertaining people - letting them connect with emotions, experiences, memories. And from there came an another interesting point: in my FUSIONpresents world, as much as I'm all about an artist ultimately promoting and performing his or her original wonderful music, IF the artist is truly in music to ENTERTAIN, then I believe that one road to get there is to build a repertoire of songs that a lot of people know, get gigs in places where an artist can potentially get paid to perform because he/she is generating revenue (and added value) for the venue, and in the midst of the repertoire that everyone is enjoying, throw in the original tracks. You might even sell your original albums, or even better, meet someone who thinks you're great and also knows someone who knows someone in the music business who can potentially get you to the place you want to be. So, in my world, it's ALL about entertainment ;) and hopefully with hard work and lots of shows it will all fit into place :)
This is for my style of music though (World Pop Rock Fusion) - I'm not expecting a death metal group to get gigs in a hotel lounge playing Frank Sinatra and casually throw in their original magic. However, keep this in mind: unless you are creating a brand new genre of music that is COMPLETELY new and un-influenced by any prior music or group, there is probably a market for "similar type" music that you play, people who like that type of music, go to shows of that type, buy records, download tunes, watch online videos etc. You could get a few raised eyebrows and interest if you present a cover tune "your way" in that sort of a setting - You'd gain that rapport with your market because they recognize the tune, but you put a new spin on it to make it your own, and very likely if it is well presented, it will be impressionable and you'll gain that audience's respect and ultimately love, and they'll want to see what else you've got.
I know a lot of artists might disagree with this philosophy, but unless you're a KNOCKOUT talent with the perfect look in the perfect place at the perfect time, getting your music out there is hard work. But there are creative ways to do it. That's just the way I see it - build your repertoire and get out there. Write me a note at sami@fusionpresents.com if you agree or disagree. I'm interested in learning what YOU have to say.
Hope you continue to like the music and thank you GEOFF JOHNSON for starting me out on the radio!
Looking forward, Sami FUSIONpresents www.fusionpresents.com
P.S. I'm a musician and entertainer who has emerged from a corporate and academic marketing background. As much as I believe in music, I believe in brand, image, content and consistency. Be peaceful.
