Goodnight Grace
Lets meet a rarity. A local band that incorporates many influences in a neat, presentable package. Three mates who have boiled down the musical process to one medium; making sure you have as much fun hearing them as they do playing for you. Meet Langley’s favorite trio, Goodnight Grace.
Headed by Taylor Richardson on vocals/bass, Andrew Yasumiishi with vocals/guitar and Lloyd Quaale on the drums, the former four-man decided to take a step back when their former bass player left. With a trio, GNG discovered that creative mishaps often lead to the best results, and have decided to take their music seriously ever since. The band was officially created in 2009.
There is something unique to the style of GNG that sets them apart from other locals. Dual vocals is one of them. Taylor and Andrew both play bass and guitar respectively, but they both lend their voices to give substance to solid lyrics. For such a young band, they have a synergy that takes other groups years to muster.
With inspirations from Muse, the Arctic Monkeys, Motley Crue, Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold, GNG makes some uplifting music. The band likes its music to be fun, upbeat, catchy quirky. It's a far cry from many of the Lower Mainland’s moodier musicians. If asked what genre the band fits into, front man Taylor Richardson simply replies, “Heavy groove rock.”
“It’s a rock sound, we like catchiness, head banging (not too metal) rock with a groove element. It’s kind of hard to describe.” Speaking for his band, Taylor said that having two front men keeps a much better balance for his group, and allows them to utilize their instruments fully.
In terms of an agenda, the band had one thing to say; “We want to play for people.” A simple, but stern commitment that would surely put them ahead of the game. “We would love nothing more than to play at a festival. It would be awesome to meet so many musicians and be a part of that experience as well as being surrounded by others who share our passion. “
If passion is what you need for success, then Goodnight Grace is definitely not lacking. You rarely meet a local band that practices more and devotes their lives to the music. Seeing them live is definitely going to be a treat, and keeping your eyes on Vancouver’s rock scene might just give you that opportunity.
